waxing day moon
a seal fat for winter
basks on the beach
turning tide
a starfish wriggles
in the eider’s bill
all-night storm
the pulse of hard rock
from inside the plow truck
fresh snow
a straight line of tracks
crosses the lake
snow on the river . . .
feeding buffleheads
flicker on and off
—I wrote this one for December 2020 New England Letters (which was shared today) in response to the prompt “surprise”
just a little snow
on each fallen leaf
thoughts lost on waking
an annoying song
stuck in my head
snow turns to rain
rain all night
the river grows
louder
edge of the lake
edge of my awareness
shifting ice
pandemic winter
a cabbage white flutters
inside the window
cold comfort
out of the woodwork
the faces of animals
