Halloween dawn
stirring the embers
of maple leaves
dreaming
of the island again
rain on yellow leaves
the school of hard frost thistle seeds
turning over a new leaf autumn wind
first frost . . .
a woodpecker churring
from his territory’s edge
autumn sunlight
the luminescent beauty
of a world on fire
keying out the maple leaves autumn meadowhawk
jays’ raucous calls
as they crowd the feeder
scattershot acorns
jet trails cross
above the abandoned house
bronzed oak leaves
a flick
of the snake’s tongue —
second summer
second summer
the leaves don’t stop
