turkey tail fungus

in metaphors
microcosms
moss-covered rocks
cobble the stream bed
fog then rain
the tossed pumpkin
slowly softens
the lake making ice
we slide
into winter
Thanksgiving sky
the pale potbelly
of the gibbous moon
the depth of the dark
at three a.m. then five
self-reflection
across the river
a stand of bare poplars . . .
I put on a warmer coat
November storm
the early dark briefly lit
by lightning
killing frost
a snowy owl quarters
the crimson barrens
Do you see it?
a red-tail’s last pass
late light illuminates
the barren hillside
November hike
gauging the distances
of gunfire
